-Early human markings found in Africa are over two hundred thousand years old. From the early Paleolithic to the neolithic period (35000 to 40000) early Africans and europeans lefts painting in caves, including lascaux caves in southern France and Altemira spain

-Throughout the world, from africa to North America prehistoric people left numerous petroglyphs, which are carved or scratched signs or simple figures on rock

-Over time picture symbols began to represent the sounds of the objects depicted instead of the objects themselves, these symbols evolved into Cuneiform. Cuniform was later mixed with relief images

-Writing allowed society to stabalize itself under the rule of law, such as the code of Hammurabi

-Egyptians for a long time retained their picture writing system called hieroglyphs .
